How to Improve Health Delivery

The health sector of the country must be improved upon. The wealth of a nation depends on the health of its people.

Hence, primary health care, accessibility to

health facilities and environmental cleanliness must be sustained.

The following measures can be put in place to improve health care delivery

1. Malaria prevention and treatment:

The high incidence of malaria in the country can be reduced through education,

the use of treated mosquito nets, draining of stagnant water, clearing of bushes

and the use of effective doses of anti-malaria tablets. Efforts must be put in place to

break the life cycle of mosquitoes within the communities.

We must ensure that our communities are well kept to prevent the breeding of

insects and other disease-causing organisms. Treated insecticide nets must be

e given to pregnant women and children at no cost. This is to prevent the

transmission of the plasmodium parasites, especially to infants and nursing

mothers.

2. HIV/AIDS campaign:

The HIV/AIDS pandemic is a serious threat to the human resource needs of the

country. Therefore, all hands must be on deck to fight against the spread and

transmission of the disease and other sexually transmitted infections. Public

education, voluntary testing and counselling must be encouraged at all levels of

society. Stigmatisation must be discouraged. We must show compassion to those

infected with the virus and treat them with care. This will reduce the rate of new

infections and the health risks associated with the disease.

3. Provision of healthy food to children:

Malnutrition affects the development of many children in Ghana. The nation must

encourage breastfeeding, soya meals, the consumption of protein (fish and meat

and eggs), and the drinking of clean water. The current school feeding programme

is one way the state has responded to malnutrition among many pupils in our

deprived districts and villages. Resources must be sort to make this a nation-wide

programme. Pregnant women must be educated on the need to have proper

feeding, enough rest, and exercise regularly in order to be healthy.

4. Improved conditions of service for health workers:

Health professionals must be treated with care and respect. Their working

conditions must be improved to control the mass exodus of health professionals to

developed countries for greener pastures. Realistic wages and salaries,

allowances, cars, bungalows, study leave with pay and promotion must be put in

place to maintain nurses, doctors and Para-medics.

5. Improved health facilities:

The state must provide more health facilities such as clinics, hospitals, and polyclinics,

and improve on existing ones. Some strategically located district health facilities must

be upgraded to District Hospitals. More Community Health Nurses and Medical

Assistance must be trained to play active roles in health delivery in rural and semi-

urban communities. Medical facilities must be fully equipped so that health delivery

will be easy and affordable.

6. Training of local health workers:

Local herbalists, "wanzams" (circumcisers), Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) and

spiritualists in rural communities must be trained and integrated into the health
