How To Improve The Education System

Education holds the key to the future development of this country. In this regard, frantic efforts must be put in place to improve accessibility, quality of delivery and structures, good textbooks, and improved teachers' welfare.

The following are ways of sustaining and improving education in Ghana:

1. Expansion of infrastructure for education:

Expansion and improvement of the existing infrastructure at the primary, Junior

High, Senior High, and tertiary levels must be seen as urgent and a national

priority. More classrooms, libraries, ICT centers, laboratories, dining halls, and

accommodation for teaching and non-teaching stuff must be improved or provided.

This will help improve the quality of teaching and learning in our educational

institutions. In the long term, a sustainable education will improve the human

opens resources needs of the country.

This will reduce the incidence of high rates of illiteracy; improve accessibility to

export quality education and national development. The more good schools we have, the

better it is for the country.

2. Motivation of teachers:

Teacher motivation must be addressed. The old adage that the "teacher's reward is

in heaven" must be discarded. Their reward must be on earth too! Teachers'

wages, salaries, allowances, promotion, and study leave with pay must be the focus of

teachers' welfare. A well-trained and motivated teacher is a national asset to

groom future scholars, engineers, doctors, and leaders.

3. Revision of curricula:

Educational curricula must be updated and reviewed periodically to meet the

needs of society and industry. Our education must be tailor-made to address

the current and future needs of the country. A half-baked educated person is a liability

to national goals and aspirations.

4. Emphasis on technical, vocational, and ICT education:

The future of Ghana hangs on technical, vocational, science, and ICT education.

This should be the focus of our educational reforms. The emphasis should be on

the training of the human resource to meet the need of the industry. We must learn

from Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries.

When this is done, the products from our educational institutions will be ready for

the world of work. It also leads to more people going to the informal sector; hence,

we can reduce unemployment, prostitution, crime, drug peddling, and substance

abuse. A self-employed individual does not depend on the public sector for

employment. In effect, this strategy will reduce national unemployment drastically

and improve the national income of the country.
